God Knows the Map

The other day I was taking a walk when my mom called me.

She was driving and made a wrong turn on the way to her destination. Her GPS directions had shut off and she was in the middle of an unfamiliar area, not sure which way to go in order to get back on the route to her destination.

I told my mom to share her location with me and I would tell her how to get to her destination. I saw where she was and gave her step by step directions until she reached her destination.

Even though my mom didn’t have a map or a GPS screen to look at, she wasn’t worried or fearful that I would lead her in the wrong direction. She knew that I could see the map and I could see where she was, and she was trusting that I would lead her correctly. I told her where to turn, what streets she would pass, and how close she was getting to her destination.

That conversation with my mom was a great reminder of how God guides us. We are unable to see the roadmap of our lives. We don’t know what will happen in a week, a month, a year, or a decade from now, but God is always there guiding us. Our lives are filled with so many obstacles. We may hit a fork in the road, not knowing which route is the best route to take. We may hit an unexpected detour, taking us longer than expected to reach our destination. We may hit a dead end, a path that leads us nowhere. We may be on the right path and cruising along enjoying the scenery. No matter what shows up in our roadmap, God knows the map of our lives and is there to help guide us. If we hit a fork in the road, He will point us in the right direction. If we hit a detour, He will be there to comfort us if things are taking longer than we had hoped. If we find ourselves on a dead end, He will be there to pick us up and steer us back on the right road again.

Just as how my mom trusted in me even though she couldn’t see the map, God wants us to trust in Him to guide us through our roadmap of life. He wants to instruct us on the way we should go, because He knows what is best for our lives. So no matter if you find yourself at a fork in the road, taking a long time on a detour, end up in a dead end, or are cruising along on the right path, remember - turn to The One who sees the map and The One who wants to guide your every step.

Journal Prompt - Was there a time in your life that you experienced a fork in the road, a detour, or found yourself on a dead end? Did you turn to God for direction? How can you trust God and turn to Him for continual guidance as you make your way through your roadmap of life?

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8
